Women in Design: Fleur Cowles

Artist, socialite, writer, diplomat and fashion editor Fleur Cowles is best known as the creative force behind the short-lived Flair magazine, which ran in the early 1950s.

Cowles changed the concept of the magazine from a disposable rag to a desirable and collectible high art object. Flair experimented so wildly and brilliantly with paper sizes, textures and technology that it broke the bank. But it will always be remembered for its provocative design, sophisticated advertising layouts, and production quality.
